Every year, somewhere around the last week of September, the questions start. “When is Halloween?”. “How much longer until Halloween?” and so on, and so forth for the next 30 days. This year I’m fighting the constant questions with a Halloween Countdown Wreath! Keep reading to see how you too can stop the never-ending Halloween questions and make a Halloween Countdown Wreath of your own.
This Halloween Countdown Wreath is super simple and easy to make. Since we’ve recently made a huge move overseas and all of my sewing supplies are in the middle of the ocean somewhere, this wreath is made from toilet paper tubes and crepe paper.
I figure it’s easy enough to modify and make it with fabric in place of the crepe paper if you plan to do this every year. Here are the basic steps for making a Halloween Countdown Wreath.
Step one, gather your toilet paper tubes. This is literally the hardest part of this project because it requires forethought. Unless your family goes through 15 rolls of toilet paper in one night, you’re going to need to start thinking about this, at least, 15 days out from Halloween. I’ve gathered 15 tubes but if you want to count down from October 1st, just double the number collected. You’ll want to lay these out to see how the wreath will look once everything is in position.
Step two, gather fun. little gifts to surprise the kids with when they open a tube each day. This can be candy, small toys or even money. For smaller items, you’ll want to wrap them in a bit of tissue paper so they don’t slide around inside when you hang the wreath.
Now, wrap each tube in a rectangle of crepe paper. You’ll want your paper to be at least 3 inches longer on each end of the tube and it must overlap when wrapped around the circumference.
Simply overlap the crepe paper around the tube, twist on each end and secure with a small piece of pipe cleaner.
You can choose to do this all in one Halloween color or alternate colors. If you don’t like orange, purple and even gold are fun colors to pair together.
Using labels and sharpies, create numbered labels for each day of your countdown. Or create the numbers on the computer and print them.
Once your labels are in place, find a piece of cardboard big enough for your tubes to fit in a ring. You’ll want them to hang off the cardboard a bit but have enough room in the ring to fit snug and securely. Once you’ve laid them out, draw a circle on the cardboard to show where the middle of the ring will be.
Cut out the middle of the circle and trim the ring so that a limited amount of cardboard shows through. Use Elmer’s glue or a hot glue gun to secure the wrapped tubes in place. Find a coordinating ribbon and tie it to the top and it’s ready to hang.
