July is the month for all things Harry Potter! Which means it’s time for another Harry Potter inspired craft. If you have a Harry Potter fan in the house, they are going to want this easy to make, DIY Harry Potter Tote Bag.
Each year in July, Raegun Ramblings celebrates Harry Potter’s literary birthday with the Happy Harry Potter Series
This amazing series is full of fun crafts, recipes, and activities that are inspired by this fabulous book series. It might just be my favorite month of the year. This year I’m adding a DIY Harry Potter Tote Bag to our collection of awesome, handmade Harry Potter items. It’s easy to make and goes together in less than 30 minutes. Who doesn’t want to carry their books in a Harry Potter tote bag?
Want to make one for yourself? Here’s what you need to do.
- black, maroon, yellow felt (100% wool works best if you ever want to wash your item)
- 14″ canvas tote bag (affiliate link)
- black sharpie marker
- contrasting thread
- fusible interfacing (optional)
Start by cutting a 13.5 X 3.5 piece of yellow felt. Then cut 5 maroon rectangles, 1.5″ X 3.5″. Pin the maroon rectangles onto the yellow felt, spacing them 2 inches apart. Topstitch the long sides of each maroon rectangle and set aside.
Now cut a 13.5″ X 5″ rectangle from black felt. Using a rotary cutter, cut one long side to look like hair. Make sure you leave a wider space in the middle so his scar will show.
Pin the hair to the top of the craft bag, being careful not to pin the bag together, and topstitch.
Then pin the “scarf” to the top of the bag, again making sure not to catch the back, and topstitch the long sides (top and bottom) of the “scarf”.
Using black felt scraps, cut two circles (cutting out the middles to form glasses) and three small rectangles 1.5″ by 3″. You’ll want to cut the third rectangle down to 2 inches or so. Pin in place making sure the circles cover the rectangle pieces. You can also use fusible interfacing to keep these in place.
Topstitch in places and using the black sharpie, finish the tote bag by drawing on Harry Potter’s scar. Voila! There you have it.
Now your DIY Harry Potter Tote Bag is ready to play the part of purse, library book tote, or even your craft bag!
