You know your sweet baby can save the day with one well placed smile. A natural superhero! Now you can have them dress the part and prepare them for a future of good deeds with this fun, DIY Superhero Bib Pattern!
Welcome back for another round of Handmade Gifts For Boys. Jess, of If Only They Would Nap and I strive to bring you crafty, handmade gift ideas that we know the boys will love. If you’re not familiar with our households, Jess and I are moms of ALL boys. In fact, with the addition of her newest, we’re up to a total of 8 BOYS! With that many boys around, it’s pretty safe to say we know what boys like. We also know that many of these gift ideas are perfect for girls too. Which basically means, if you have a cool kid who you like to create for, this is the series for you. And while we run it just before Christmas, we hope you’ll bookmark or pin these ideas so you can come back any time you need a handmade gift idea.
In honor of Jess’ addition as well as two new nephews in my life, I’m kicking off the Handmade Gifts For Boys season with a handmade gift idea perfect for the newest members of the household. These fun, cape-like bibs will make the perfect gift for those expecting or who’ve just received the blessing of a new baby. Since they’re made from t-shirt material, these Superhero bibs are comfortable and perfect for catching all the dribble a new baby can dish out.

- 1/4 yard knit fabric + scraps for the superhero symbol of your choice
- Iron-on fusible interfacing (affiliate link)
- Sew-in Velcro
- coordinating thread
Once you’ve printed the pattern and cut your pieces, follow the instructions on the package to fuse your interfacing to the wrong side of one bib piece.
Using knit or 100% wool felt fabric scraps, cut and sew together your superhero symbol. If you don’t feel comfortable creating these free-form, use Google Images to create a template.
Then pin your symbol to the right side of the bib piece without the interfacing and applique in place.
Place and pin the bib pieces, right sides together and sew around the outside, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Back stitch and leave a 2 inch space at the bottom of the bib and again at the top of the longer strap. This will allow for easy turning and the insertion of the cape.
Notch around all curved edges, being super careful not to clip into the seam. Now turn right side out.
Here’s that opening at the top. Press the seam inward. Do the same for the opening at the bottom of the bib.
Place the cape pieces, right sides together and sew using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave the top edge open. Clip the corners and then turn right side out. Topstitch around the outer edge (optional).
Place the open edge of the cape in between the open edge of the top strap and pin in place. Topstitch around the entire bib. Sew a piece of Velcro to each side of the straps and voila! You’ve got yourself a superhero bib complete with cape!
How cute is that little munchkin going to look during tummy time?
