Teacher Appreciation Week and the end of the school year seem to run together here and so I’m always on the look out for cost-effective teacher gifts that our teachers will appreciate. Being a teacher myself, I know a mug or box of chocolates will make a teacher smile but in the long run, because they’re spending their own money on supplies year in and year out, what they’re really dying to have are useful classroom supplies. This year, the kids are giving this Giant Whiteboard Eraser Critter. You won’t believe how little it will cost you (in both time and money) to create these fun and functional gifts.
This Giant Whiteboard Eraser Critter is made from a car washing mitt and a small piece of wool felt. Both items are great because when the mitt get’s dirty, your teacher can just throw it in the washer and dryer. The bottom of the mitt takes the brunt of the whiteboard marker gunk but if you’re planning to make this washable, make sure you use 100% wool felt that has been pre-washed and dried.
This project is so quick and no kidding, buy a few extras to use around the house because the kids are going to want one of their own.
- Car Wash Mitt- I bought this two pack set (affiliate link) because I liked the bright colors, but you may be able to find them at your local dollar store.
- 100% Wool Felt
- Sharpie Marker or Fabric Paint
- Usual Sewing Notions
Step 1: Carefully cut down the side seams of the car wash mitt. Lay flat and pin an oval shaped piece of felt to the front side. Sew around the edge of the felt piece with a satin or zig zag stitch to secure.
Step 2: You’ll want a strong thread and needle for this step. The mitt is pretty thick so make sure you put your feed dogs down before sewing. If this is still too much for you machine, you can always slip stitch the sides by hand.
Now, flip the mitt over and pin, right sides together on each side. Sew down the sides using a zig zag stitch. Make sure to go over the elastic portion twice for durability.
Step 3: Draw or paint on your critter’s face with Sharpie or fabric paint. I went with a hedgehog type body but feel free to go wild here. Monster, dragon, happy kitty cat, the possibilities are endless!
Like I said, be sure to make an extra for the kids. This guy complains almost every day when it’s time to work on his Word Study Words. But this my friends has made all the difference. Instead of writing them on paper, we practice on an oversized. Knowing he would get to use the Giant Eraser at the
end has made a huge difference in his willingness to get that homework done.
I can just image in the class clamoring to be the first one to use this Giant Whiteboard Eraser Critter. Some time the smallest gifts can make the most mundane tasks into a classroom favorite!
