Do you ever glance down at your couch pillows and realize you’ve still got your seasonal pillow shams out, months after the actual holiday? As I looked at the pillows on my couch the other day, I realized things will still looking suspiciously like some one had forgotten to change out the winter decor. I decided to do a little Spring “cleaning” and remedy the situation. More color equals the heralding of Spring temperatures, no? With that in mind, I whipped up this fun colorful Felt Hexi Pillow to bring a bit of light into the living room.
This pillow sham goes together in under 30 minutes and is just so bright and cheery, you won’t be able to help smile upon looking at it. Even if it’s still snowing outside your window.
The pillow making process is super simple. Simply cut your hexis to your preferred size. I used a template with 2 inch sides but mixing and matching smaller and larger hexagon shapes would be a lot of fun too! Simply pin or affix the shapes onto a white, 19 X 19 inch square of white cotton or linen fabric (you’ll want to cut a second square the same size for the pillow back). A bit of Heat n’ Bond (affiliate link) goes a long way in keeping the shapes from sliding out of place during the quilting process. Cut a square of quilt batting just slightly larger than your pillow front and pin together before quilting.
If you align the felt hexagon shapes in the perfect line up, you can simply start quilting, following the corners of each hexagon. If you’ve gone for a more spread out look, or want a different quilting pattern, you can first “quilt” the hexagons and then go back and create an alternate quilting design on the rest of the pillow.
Once the pillow sham top is quilted, you can continue on by sewing on the zipper to the front and back pieces and then sewing, right sides together, around the three sides of the pillow using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. That’s it! Now go throw that new pillow onto your couch and revel in the added color!
