The pattern comes with options for two different handles depending on whether you’re using leather or an alternate heavy-weight fabric. This time around, I used a 2.5 oz. weight ribbed vinyl so I used the alternate, non-leather handle method.
I am so excited to tell you about the latest pattern from my friend Jodi of Sew Fearless- The Better-Than-Basic Bag Pattern. I’m not even remotely kidding or exaggerating when I say you NEED this sewing pattern.
The Better-Than-Basic Bag is an over sized, soft-structure flat-bottomed tote with leather details on the exterior, a zipper pocket dividing the interior and a magnetic snap closure. The finished bag height is about 12 inches high and it has a base that is 13 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Which means there’s plenty of space to put all of the extra things you “need” to carry, especially if there are little people relying on you for tissues, and wipes, and snacks, and things to keep them busy in quiet places.
The instructions for the entire bag are super easy to follow but I was blown away by Jodi’s method for putting together the inside zipper pocket. Just because I’m the kind of girl who can never find things in her back, I drafted an additional patch pocket for my sunglasses and phone. I find if I keep things in a certain place, my frazzled mommy-brain is better able to find them.
The Better-Than-Basic Bag pattern comes with a wealth of knowledge about picking fabrics and combinations of interlinings, thread types and tips for top stitching leather, so if you’re new to bag making, don’t be intimidated.
