Last month, a group of blogging friends decided to do a secret gift swap. I love making things for people I know will appreciate a handmade item. Knowing this gift was for the super fabulous and sweet Christie of Lemon Squeezy Home, I wanted to make something that she’d love and could actually use. I sat down in front of my fabric stash and just about blew a gasket trying to pair fabrics for bag patterns I already have and finally settled on this black and white geometric pattern paired with some fun, ribbed, gold leather. I wanted to make something that could be used as an over sized clutch for a night out on the town and also a funky tablet cover for those every day moments. Thus was born, the Geometric Bling Foldover Clutch.
– 1/2 yard of black and white geometric fabric (I used this Remix Triangle print by Ann Kelle)
– 1/2 yard of lining fabric
– 1 1/4 yard gold leather or another bright solid color would work great too
– 1 3/4 inch button
– scrap of interfacing
Start by cutting one 12 1/2 X 19 inch rectangle of the main fabric, two 6 X 19 rectangles of leather, and one 24 1/2 X 19 rectangle of the lining fabric.
Pin one leather piece, right sides together, to one short raw edge and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Fold the fabric, right sides together, matching the short ends, pin and stitch. Turn right side out. Then repeat, sewing the side seams of the lining fabric.
With the right side of the main fabric, facing the right side of the lining fabric, slide the lining fabric over and match the raw edges.
Pin in place and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance and leaving a 3-4 inch space for turning.
Pull the bag right side out, press the seam opening and topstitch around the mouth of the bag.
Cut a small piece of interfacing or tear away stabilizer, then mark and sew your button hole.
Sew your button to the inside of the bag and you’re finished!
It’s now ready to hold all of your favorite things. The size of this clutch even allows room to carry your tablet when you’re on the go.
Or have it hold small items and carry it under your arm.
