Spring is all about the beauty of the Earth, growing things, and the spring rains that help to make all of that growth happen. So why not brighten up your home with a colorful, seasonal pillow sham that speaks of those things. Not to mention the fabric scrap busting possibilities!
Here’s what you need to make a Spring Showers pillow of your very own.
– Pattern pieces
– Two 18 X 18 inch squares
– Fabric Scrap
– fusible Heat and Bond
-16 inch zipper (optional)
Iron Heat and Bond to the wrong side of each fabric scrap.
Trace pattern pieces and cut out.
Peel off the backing and iron to the right side of the pillow front.
Once all of the pattern pieces are ironed on, use a zig zag or satin stitch to applique each piece to the pillow front.
After finishing the umbrella and rain drop appliques, I felt the top of the pillow needed a little color. I quickly ironed some Heat and Bond to the back of some red and white polka dot fabric and drew a quick bird outline and sewed it to the top of the umbrella to look like he was perched on top.
Once all of the pieces have been attached to the pillow front, it’s time to attach the zipper. Start by placing the zipper, right side down against the pillow piece and pinning in place. Using a zipper foot, sew as close to the zipper as you can, sew the zipper. Press the seam and topstitch on the right side.
With the right side of the zipper facing the right side of the pillow piece, repeat with the other side.
Once both sides of the zipper are sewn and topstitched, the wrong side will look like this.
With right sides together, pin all the way around each side of the pillow, starting here the zipper ends and finishing where the zipper begins. Sew around the outside edge using a 1/2 seam allowance. Then zig zag stitch around to finish the seams. Clip corners and turn pillow sham right side out and stuff in your pillow form.
And now you have a bright and colorful, seasonal pillow that will have you cheering for Spring weather!
