I’m so excited to be a part of Elegance and Elephants‘ Knock It Off series today. When Heidi asked me to be a part of her series, I went straight to my Boy Apparel pin board to see what caught my eye.
This pin makes me smile every time. It comes from Little Hanbury, an online store that sells a wide range of European children’s clothing. The pants are from Imps and Elfs and the tank from Tootsa Mac Ginty. What catches my eye is a combination between the bright colors and the adorable face this little guy is pulling. When I clicked over to the actual Tootsa Mac Ginty site, to read up on the clothing, I found out the tank had some matching undies. How could I pass up a chance to make a matching tank and undies set?
In the end, I went ahead and made the Imps and Elf pants as well. I dyed some white twill fabric to get the color I wanted and used Figgy’s Banyan Pant pattern which was perfect.
Today though, I’ll be focusing on the tank and undies set.
If you’ve got a little one who’ll fit a 3T-4T (measurements; chest- 22 1/2 in, waist- 20 in hips- 21 in), simply print the free pattern below and get sewing. For those of you who don’t, you can follow the tutorial by tracing around a nice fitting tank and a pair of briefs you’ve already got on hand.
-free Contrast Tank and Contrast Undies pattern (size 3T-4T)
-1 yard of gray, ribbed knit fabric
– scraps of contrast ribbing (each strip needs to measure the length of each opening (neck, arms, legs and waist) X 1 5/8 inches
Right sides together, sew the shoulder seams using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Then pin and sew the side seams from arm hole to shirt hem. Turn the tank right side out.
Fold each strip in half, short ends together. Sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance back stitching at beginning and end.
Fold each strip matching up the raw edges, wrong sides together. Press.
Make sure your tank is right side out. Slip the neck band over the neck opening of the tank, matching the neckband seam to one of the shoulder seams, right sides together and pin.
Sew around the neck band using a zig-zag stitch and a 1/4 inch seam, back stitching at the beginning and end. Flip neck band up, press the seam down, and topstitch.
Pin and sew each armband in the same manner, press each seam down and top stitch. Hem the tank by folding the shirt bottom to the wrong side 1/4 inch and again, another 1/4 inch. Press and sew using a zig-zag stitch or double needle.
Now on to the undies!
Place the back and front pieces, right sides together. Pin and sew the sides using a 1/2 inch seam.
Pin and sew the inseam using a 1/2 inch seam and a zig zag stitch. Turn undies right side out and follow the steps above to add contrast ribbing to the waistband and leg openings.
And there you have it, your very own knock off Tootsa Mac Ginty contrast tank and undies.
Thanks for stopping by today. Let me know if you have any questions about the tutorial or pattern. This is my first digital pattern so I’d love to hear your feedback if you make a set. It has been so much fun to be a part of Heidi’s Knock It Off Series.
