The hat was made using the “Let’s Go Fishing Hat” pattern comes from “Sewing For Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe. This was actually the optional May, Sewing For Boys Sew Along pattern but since I went with the Mimi’s Suspender Shorts option, the hat was placed on the back burner.
This is a superb, “while the kids nap” project. I was able to cut and sew this hat in well under an hour and I love that while the directions walk you through a completed raw edge style fishing hat, it really can be reversible depending on your style choice that day.
I decided to go with a patchworky (that made up word’s for you Mom!) look that fit with the messy feel of the hat. The size 6/7 fits perfectly and the pattern goes together quickly. I’d love to give this one a try using a bunch of coordinating fabrics rather than just two. This one was made with left overs (beige twill and Foulard in Charcoal from Rashida Coleman Hale) from the Little Heartbreaker shorts.
It’s the perfect ‘keep the sun off your face” kinda hat and if it ends up going missing on the school football pitch (aka; soccer field), at least I know I can whip up another one right quick. Not that this looks like a boy who misplaces things. Yeah, right!
